Sr. Prototype Machinist

WET
is pushing the boundaries for manufacturing innovation. We are looking for an experienced Sr. Prototype Machinist to fabricate parts and components used for research and development in our world class manufacturing facility.

In this role, you will be taking drawings from our development engineers and building parts for testing and evaluation. Make a part from a complete drawing, solid models, or from a crude sketch coupled with verbal instructions from a design engineer. Use Mastercam software to program quick-turn parts.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Make parts from a complete drawing, or from a crude sketch coupled with verbal instructions from a design engineer
  • Analyze a part and suggest changes that will make it easier to machine or otherwise create in production
  • Confer with the design engineer to advise on changes to the part or parts that would make them easier to manufacture, and more reliable. In other words, this position is part machinist, part manufacturing engineer, part model maker, part tool and die maker, and part setup-and-order-of-operations expert
  • Determine when a part needs to be made with precision so that it mirrors a future production piece, and when it is more useful to the project to quickly pirate something together using found materials--even wood instead of steel--to get the part performing for the evaluation to be made
  • Be extremely comfortable in working with engineers and effectively listening to them, and as well advising them and making suggestions to them
  • Be capable on both manual and CNC mills and lathes, welding, soldering, and other typical machine shop tools
  • Determine when a part needs to be made with precision so that it mirrors a future production piece, and when it is more useful to the project to quickly pirate something together using found materials--to get the part performing for the evaluation to be made
  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators
  • Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, waterjet, grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes
  • Extended fabrication knowledge of machining for rapid turnaround, welding, and cutting using band saw or CNC Plasma cutter
  • Ability and willingness to help others
Shop Equipment:
  • Set up and operate all related Prototyping equipment
  • TL3 – Lathe
  • TL2 – Lathe
  • VM2 – Mill
  • Prototrak – Knee
  • Prototrak – Table
  • Sinker EDM
  • Wire EDM
  • F5 Makino’s
  • Saw’s grinders, quality etc…
  • Canned cycles
  • Soldering
  • Waterjet
  • Welding
  • SolidWorks (a plus)
